Traveling the world and in the mood for traditional restaurants? “Tasteatlas” has selected the 100 most legendary restaurants worldwide. TRAVELBOOK presents the three winners and shows the top 25.
What is typical Cologne, Brooklyn, Zurich, Belgrade, or Singaporean cuisine? You can find out in the results of a recent ranking by the culinary travel guide Tasteatlas. The guide evaluated 23,952 traditional restaurants from all over the world and selected the 100 most legendary. The top 100 were deemed “cultural landmarks” that are “known for their longevity, reliability, and iconic dishes” and embody “the spirit of their cities.” The ranking reflects their history, public, and Tasteatlas ratings for their specialties, according to the authors. The top 100 also includes three German restaurants, one even in the top five.
Overview
The Most Legendary Restaurant in the World is in Austria
According to Tasteatlas, the traditional Viennese restaurant Figlmüller is the most legendary restaurant in the world and, by its own account, the home of the schnitzel. Known for its classic Viennese schnitzel as well as its apparently outstanding potato salad, it has won over 52 restaurant critics, according to Tasteatlas. The traditional Viennese family restaurant is now run by the fourth generation and originally started out as a small wine house in 1905.
Pizza Classic in Second Place
You’ve almost certainly heard of this pizzeria (at least if you’ve read Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat Pray Love): L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele in Naples, Italy, itself the birthplace of pizza. The small traditional restaurant was founded in 1870 and is best known for its Napoletana, Margherita, and Marinara pizzas. Incidentally, there is also a branch of the famous pizzeria in the Schöneberg district of Berlin.
Three German Restaurants in the Ranking
The ranking of the world’s most legendary restaurants continues with a German restaurant classic that is known far beyond the Bavarian border and has expanded not only to the German capital but even to Australia: Munich’s Hofbräuhaus. This oldie among ranked restaurants has been around since 1589, and its famous specialty is pork knuckle. There is also the classic veal sausage, cheese spaetzle, Bavarian pretzels, and many other classics from the southern German state.
In addition to the Munich Hofbräuhaus, two other traditional German restaurants are in the top 100. 34th place is taken by Cologne’s Früh am Dom with its famous sauerbraten and its specialty “Himmel und Erde” (black pudding with mashed potatoes). A little further down the list, in 53rd place, is Nuremberg’s Bratwursthäusle. This is even older than Munich’s Hofbräuhaus: the legendary restaurant has existed since 1312 and serves, of course, Nuremberg bratwurst.
