The time had come again on October 9 in Berlin: the TRAVELBOOK Award took place for the third time, choosing the best trending destinations for the upcoming year in various categories. Among them was the most beautiful small town in Germany, for which TRAVELBOOK readers were able to vote in the “Public Voting” category for the most beautiful small towns in the DACH region. Out of a total of ten picturesque small towns in Germany, one in particular stood out.
Which ones are the most charming small towns in the DACH region? We asked our readers once again. And our more than 200,000 followers and subscribers answered on Facebook and Instagram. The editorial team then meticulously evaluated the responses, enriching them with additional insights before compiling them into a vote. Ultimately, ten picturesque German small towns made the final cut, and over the course of three weeks, TRAVELBOOK readers cast their votes to crown the most beautiful small town in Germany in 2024, setting the stage for a must-visit destination in 2025. The winning town has now been chosen.
This is the most beautiful small town in Germany
And the winner is … Monschau. Never heard of it? It’s high time you did. The picturesque town of Monschau in the Eifel region of North Rhine-Westphalia enchants visitors and residents alike with its backdrop of half-timbered houses and cobbled streets. Visitors will find numerous small boutiques and galleries in winding alleyways, as well as a number of listed houses in the old town. Quite a few of them have been standing there, in a prime location directly on the Rur, since the 18th century.
Nestled in the western part of Germany and a stone’s throw from the Belgian border, Monschau captivated TRAVELBOOK readers, with 17 percent casting their votes in its favor. This makes Monschau the most beautiful small town in Germany, ahead of Cochem in second place and Meersburg in third.
Mayor of Monschau accepts the award in person
The mayor of Monschau, Dr. Carmen Krämer, was visibly proud of her hometown, Monschau. “I grew up in a district of Monschau myself and remember when I was a child there were still houses for sale for just a few euros. In recent years, however, many structural developments, cultural events, our Christmas market, the special nature that surrounds the town, and, above all, our committed citizens themselves, have ensured that Monschau has become a popular vacation and excursion destination. You’ll discover stores and small workshops brimming with love and care, along with breathtaking hiking trails set against a stunning backdrop. The pandemic, but also some films that have been shot here and, of course, the photos that have gone viral on social media, ensure that the name of our beautiful small town is well known and often brings a smile to people’s faces, whether I’m in Hamburg, Munich, or Berlin.”
