Various places in Italy have been making headlines for years with some original initiatives to combat the increasing depopulation of small towns and villages. Sometimes there are gifts of money or other benefits for people wishing to immigrate, sometimes entire houses are “given away” for just one euro. The northern Italian province of Trentino is now following suit — and is paying people who move there a sum of up to 100,000 euros. But of course, there are also some conditions for serious potential buyers in this case.

The Autonomous Province of Trentino is paying people who move there a sum of up to 100,000 euros. The province, which forms the southern part of the Trentino-Alto Adige region, is one of the most beautiful and popular vacation regions in Italy. No wonder, because Trentino offers a beautiful and varied landscape, with mountains over 3500 meters high, picturesque valleys, clear lakes, and exciting cities, especially the provincial capital, Trento. Trentino also has a share of the northern shore of Lake Garda.

However, despite its beauty and touristic relevance, Trentino has a problem like so many regions throughout Italy: an increasing depopulation, especially of villages in rural areas. Many people are moving to the cities, and birth rates are falling accordingly. Trentino is now also countering this trend with an ambitious program aimed at attracting new residents. Moreover, in comparison to other initiatives, it is going one better financially: The Autonomous Province of Trentino recently announced that people who move to one of more than 30 selected municipalities could receive up to 100,000 euros.

The Conditions for the Province of Trentino Paying the 100,000 Euros

Even in this case, new residents do not simply receive this considerable sum as a gift. Firstly, the purchase of an unoccupied property in one of the listed municipalities is mandatory. Applicants can receive a maximum grant of 20,000 euros for the purchase. A further grant of up to 80,000 euros is then available for refurbishment.

In principle, anyone can apply for the grants for Trentino, including German citizens. However, there is a requirement that the purchaser of the property must move into the property themselves for a period of at least 10 years. Alternatively, according to the provincial press release, they can rent it out “at a moderate rent” to people who relocate to the municipality in question.

These Municipalities in Trentino Are Looking for New Residents

So, anyone who has already dreamed of buying a nice vacation home is unlikely to be considered as an applicant. For all those who are already thinking about emigrating to Italy and can imagine living in a village, the campaign is certainly interesting. The municipalities of Altavalle, Bleggio Superiore, Bondone, Borgo Chiese, Bresimo, Canal San Bovo, Castel Condino, Castello Tesino, Cis, Cinte Tesino, Dambel, Frassilongo, Grigno, Livo, Luserna, Mezzano, Novella, Ospedaletto, Peio, Pieve di Bono-Prezzo, Pieve Tesino, Rabbi, Rumo, Sagron Mis, Segonzano, Sover, Terragnolo, Tre Ville, Valdaone, Valfloriana, Vallarsa and Vermiglio are looking for new residents.

Maurizio Fugatti, President of the Autonomous Province of Trento, announced on Tuesday at a meeting with the mayors of the participating municipalities that a final decision on the program will be made between 20 and 25 April. The tendering process will then begin immediately afterward.
