Every year in spring, you can experience a very special highlight in Bonn: the cherry blossoms. It’s not just tourists from other parts of Germany who come to admire the pink blossoms in Heerstraße in Bonn’s old town — tourists from all over the world also come here. TRAVELBOOK shows what the spectacle means for the people of Bonn and what other places in Germany hobby botanists can visit.
Heerstraße, located in the old town of Bonn, along with several surrounding streets, has gained worldwide fame. The reason is pink and can be seen year after year in spring: the cherry blossom. Although Japanese cherry blossoms can also be found in other cities, they are rarely arranged as romantically as in Bonn’s Old Town. At the peak of their bloom, which is highly weather-dependent, one can feel as though one is beneath a pink sky that unfurls between the tightly clustered houses.

Bonn Prepares for the Cherry Blossoms — as Best It Can
However, timing your visit to coincide with this peak is not so simple. As the Kölner Stadtanzeiger reported, citing the city of Bonn, the blossoming period depends heavily on the whims of the April weather. However, the peak can be expected in mid-April and lasts up to two weeks — depending on how warm it is.

As reported by the Kölner Stadtanzeiger, Bonn introduced guided cherry blossom tours last year for the first time, and they were met with great enthusiasm, as anticipated. Tours are being offered again this year. Those interested can purchase tickets for 13 euros via the online portal.
Slated for April 8 and 10, the ‘Cherry Blossom for Early Risers’ tours aim to offer enthusiasts a serene experience of the full-bloom cherry blossoms, ideally without the throngs of tourists, notes the Kölner Stadtanzeiger.

How the Cherry Blossoms Are Celebrated Elsewhere in Germany
Bonn’s Heerstraße is certainly the most famous cherry blossom motif in Germany. Yet, there are other locales across Germany where one can savor the splendor of the blossoms, often in a far more tranquil setting.
Japanese Cherry Blossom: a Special Honor for Hamburg

The Hanseatic city presents itself as an idyllic and sought-after destination for a springtime urban getaway — and, with a stroke of luck, visitors can immerse themselves in a sea of pink hues. The cherry blossom can be enjoyed in several places in Hamburg: along the Inner Alster, at Altona Town Hall, and at the Altona Balcony, but also in the inner-city park Planten un Blomen. Hamburg also has a very special honor: according to Geo, it is the only city outside of Japan besides Washington D.C. to crown a cherry blossom queen.
Cherry Blossom with a Panoramic View of the Elbe in Dresden

Further up the Elbe, the delights of the cherry blossom season await. According to the Kreiszeitung newspaper, the Neustädter Elbufer in Dresden shines in glorious bloom — with a sensational view of the Hofkirche. The Canaletto bank is also a suitable place to linger during the cherry blossom season.
Late Cherry Blossom Delights in Berchtesgadener Land

If you’ve discovered the cherry blossom season too late and missed the enchantment, don’t fret. Then there is still a chance — namely in Berchtesgaden. Here, too, numerous magnificent pink trees are in bloom in the spa garden in front of the congress center. And much later than in the rest of the country. As the ADAC writes, the trees here often blossom much later than elsewhere due to the altitude. This translates to a fortunate opportunity where one might still revel in a sea of pink blossoms set against the majestic Alpine backdrop, possibly as late as the end of April or the onset of May.
