Most German towns and cities experience bitterly cold temperatures at the moment. On Mallorca, however, we are already seeing the first plus temperatures of up to 15 degrees. For this reason, the first natural wonder can already be discovered here: the almond blossom. Pink-red and wonderfully fragrant, the plant is a real highlight for all the senses.

When Does the Blossom Season Start?

As soon as spring arrives on the Spanish island of Mallorca, the millions of almond trees on the Balearic Islands show off their full splendor. Depending on the weather conditions, the blossoming season starts in January and lasts until March, although the likelihood of seeing a sea of blossom is highest in February.

This means that the best time to visit the natural event is in the middle of the low season, making the island significantly less crowded than in the summer months. The weather is also mild during the almond blossom season, with temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees, making a hike along the white veil of blossoms well worthwhile. At the same time, accommodation, rental cars, and tours are usually cheaper than in the high season.

The Most Beautiful Places for the Almond Blossom

Mallorca is home to numerous sweet-smelling almond trees. The places where you can admire the blossom are correspondingly numerous. According to “Inselradio” , the regions with the most almond trees include Portocolom and Cala Millor on the East Coast, Cala Figuera and Santanyí on the South Coast, and Andratx in the west of the island. As almond production is based in Sóller, among other places, there is also an abundance of almond plantations there. Here, you can discover the blossom between Palma and Sóller by car or on a historic train ride on the “Ferrocarril” wooden train.

And on the route between Sóller and Valldemossa, you can also see lush pink and white flowers along the way. For all hiking fans who are drawn out of the center, there are also various tours that lead past the fragrant flowers. For example, a 10-kilometer hike leads via the mountain village of Orient to the rock castle Castell d’Alaró, which offers far-reaching views of the almond groves. Another hiking trail leads from Esporles via the La Granja estate to the viewpoint in Banyalbufar, which also offers a view of the almond blossom.

Almond Blossom Celebrations

The almond blossom has a long tradition in Spain. As the country is one of the most important almond exporters in the world, the cultivation of the high-quality kernels is an important component of Spanish agriculture. For this reason, the blossoming of the tree is celebrated annually in many parts of Spain.

In Mallorca, for example, the almond blossom festival Firó de la Flor d’Ametler has been held regularly since 2010 and is traditionally celebrated on the second weekend in February. In addition to almond liqueurs and marzipan, the traditional Spanish almond cake Gato d’Ametlles is also offered here. There are also numerous stalls selling cosmetic products made from almonds, such as soaps and oils, which are also suitable as souvenirs and are reminiscent of the fragrant blossoms.
