Overview
Candelaria — a Seaside Resort Without Mass Tourism

Embarking on a vacation in Candelaria offers a chance to embrace the laid-back lifestyle synonymous with the Canary Islands. While this feeling has been lost in many other places on Tenerife due to mass tourism, Candelaria has managed to retain its charm. Strolling through the narrow alleyways, you’ll be charmed by the remnants of a bygone fishing village where time seems to stand still. Perfect for a vacation that promises absolute relaxation!
The volcanic origins of the Canary Island can also be clearly seen in Candelaria on the dark sandy beaches, which form a clear contrast to the sea and the green hills. The quaint town, with its dazzling whitewashed facades emerging from the dark volcanic terrain, caters to every whim and fancy. There are several beaches, bars and restaurants here. The capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife is also only around 15 kilometers away.
Our tip: Candelaria is well connected to Tenerife South Airport by bus. Buses operate daily, with departures roughly every 30 minutes, ensuring convenient travel to and from the town. A journey takes around an hour, alternatively you can take a cab or shuttle.
The Most Important Pilgrimage Site in the Canary Islands

Although Candelaria remains off the beaten path for many travelers, the town buzzes with activity twice a year. The town is considered the most important place of pilgrimage in the Canary Islands, so every year, at the beginning of February and mid-August, numerous believers make a pilgrimage to Candelaria. They all have one goal: the “Virgen de la Candelaria.” This is because the image of the “Virgin of Candelaria” stands in the basilica, which is one of the most important religious buildings in the Canary Islands.
The revered figure of the “Virgen de la Candelaria” is believed to possess protective qualities. And there is another special feature, as the original is said to have washed ashore 100 years before the Spaniards. To their astonishment, they found that the Guanches, the indigenous inhabitants of the Canary Islands, had long venerated the Mother of God. However, the original was lost in a storm surge in 1826, so a copy has stood in the Basilica de Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria since 1830.
Our tip: It is definitely worth a visit, but only outside of pilgrimage times. However, the basilica is well worth a visit during the Carmen y Santa Ana festival in July.

In addition to the basilica, Candelaria has a lot more to offer. This erstwhile fishing village is an idyllic retreat where you can unwind and let the gentle pace of life carry you away. - The Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias: A large, beautiful square in the middle of the town, which impresses with its Canarian-style architecture.
- Santa Ana Chapel: It dates back to the 18th century and is almost completely preserved. A witness to the times! The wood-carved figures of Santa Ana and the Virgen del Carmen are kept here in an altar.
- The statues of the Menceyes: This is the name given to the Guanche kings who ruled here at the time of the Spanish conquest. Large bronze statues were erected in their memory in the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias right by the sea.
- The Malpaís de Güímar Nature Park: An intriguing figure-eight trail winds through a surreal landscape that appears as though it’s from another world. Typical of Tenerife, this place was created from solidified lava flows and is absolutely worth seeing!
